Sermon

Gospel Friends

February 18, 2018 Speaker: Dennis Hermerding Series: The Church At Philippi: Pursuing Joy

Passage: Philippians 2:19–30

1. What stuck with you from the sermon?

2. How does Paul suggest that Christian friends are different from other friends? What makes them different?

3. This quote from Pastor J.R. Miller regarding friendship was read today. What do you think about this quote? How does it encourage you? How does it challenge you?

“To become another’s friend in the true sense—is to take the other into such close, living fellowship, that his life and ours are knit together as one. It is far more than a pleasant companionship in bright, sunny hours. A genuine friendship—is entirely unselfish. It seeks no benefit or good of its own. It does not love—for what it may receive—but for what it may give. Its aim is “not to be served—but to serve.”

4. How does the gospel help and shape our friendships?

5. Why is Presence so important in Paul's understanding of friendship and ministry? What role should it play in your life?

6. What are the sacrifices that we see Paul's friends make for him and for the sake of Christ? How should we apply that in our own lives? What is a practical way you can begin to do that?

7. Who is the ultimate friend that makes all this possible? How should having a friend like this transform the way we approach friendship?
